Why To Ask Why

What am I doing? Why? In your day to day activities it pays massively to ask yourself “Why am I doing this?” Think about it for a moment, we are broken people, raised by broken parents, living in a broken world. What if I am doing things “just because” and don't know the real reason. The Bible tells us that Satan is the master deceiver and maybe he has us doing the wrong things for the wrong reasons. One of the best ways to uncover deceit is to investigate, to find out the truth about things, and then we shall be able to decide if we should continue this activity or not.

Proverbs 17:3 tells us plainly that God tests the hearts, so we can be sure that events are going to come that shall reveal our hearts to us. Here is the catch, either we can examine our hearts and begin to make changes on our own with His help, or we can wait for “tests” to come that will reveal our hearts during much conflict and trouble. Choose the easier path.

By asking myself why am I doing this, and stopping to meditate upon the answers one can begin to uncover heart motives. We do things for safety, security, for greed, for self centered reasons, etc... by uncovering our motives and comparing them with scripture we can begin to see if these activities are truly helpful to my life or are wasted energy.

Socrates stated “the unexamined life is not worth living” and how much sense does that make in relation to Christian living. If all my activities are centered around safety, but God has already promised to keep me safe, is that wasted time? If my activities are upon tearing people down to build myself up, and the Bible says to humble myself and place others first, then how is that productive. We can not get caught in the trap of go, go, go, that is simply of the devil. The Lord wants us to meditate upon our lives, to stop and figure out how we should live, to apply wisdom and instruction to our lives. By uncovering our false beliefs that have motivated us for so long, and replacing them with right, true, and pure motives, one begins to enjoy the gifts of God. Stop and take time today to engagingly ask yourself the question, “Why am I doing this?”
