Ever wanted to be someone? Do you ever hear the call of fame or importance whispering in your ear? Be honest, we choose our clothes wisely to make a statement. We buy new shoes and love walking about in them. We feel slighted if no one at all notices that we just got a haircut or color today. Our watches and jewelery are always purchased with others in mind, when they notice it will it gather praise from the lips of my friends.
Jesus tells His children to calm down, to take it a bit more easy. At first glance Jesus doesn't seem to understand the need of human beings to be accepted. “Lord if we don't worry over our clothing we will be rejected” is our truest thoughts. But Jesus knows life much better than we, He tells us that we are a light in a dark place. (Matthew 5:14) As the most famous and loved man to ever exist He knows what gains the most acceptance, character.
We know that Jesus was not finely dressed for He said so Himself, but no where are we told that Jesus dressed poorly. How is it that upon exposure to thousands and thousands of people no one ever stated that He was poor in style, or wore clothing from the last decade? Maybe Jesus did not dress poorly, maybe He had average clothes, but He wore them daily as He traveled from place to place. He slept in them, sat in them, lived in them tirelessly. If Jesus often did not have time to eat or sleep how would He have time to shop? Further, did He even have much time to groom Himself, or wash on a regular basis?
Satan has tricked us into thinking more about our image than anyone will ever pay attention to: and that one person who does pay attention is going to need serious guidance from Him. But this goes deeper, true importance comes from being a light to others, our character, if Christlike, will shine so brightly that we will be of great worth to them. Those without hope, who have lost their way wandering about will be drawn towards those who are focused on deeper things, spiritual things. Those whom you draw towards Christ will appreciate you immensely and love you forever. How is that for acceptance?
